School

I am seriously annoyed with Christy's school. I don't like the San Diego Unified School District. I don't think spelling should be optional and I don't think that children should be discouraged from writing in cursive. A few weeks ago Christy's teacher lost one of her assignments. So Christy had to miss recess and redo the assignment. I don't think that's fair, it wasn't her fault. She had done the work. This Monday I went into the office and filled out an Independent Contract for Christy because she will not be in school next week. The process usually is that the parent fills out the form, the teacher and principal are given a copy of the form and the teacher gets the work ready for the time in which the child will be gone. So this morning I reminded Christy to make sure that she had her work for next week before she left school. So after school I ask Christy if she has the work and she said "my teacher didn't know I was going to be gone". So back we walk to school. Apparently the secretary that handles those forms has been out sick this week so it sat on her desk. So I had to sit in the office and wait for Christy's teacher to go and get work ready for next week. There was no way I was leaving without all that work. I don't want Christy to be marked with unexcused absences for next week because no one bothered to do anything with the form. It wouldn't have been a big deal if today had not been the last school day of the week and there being no school on Monday. Apparently all the teachers in the school district have to take two furlough days. Earlier this week I wrote Christy's teacher a note about the lack of homework coming home. She wrote back and said that she had cut back because more parents were complaining that their children had to much homework. So she cut it back to one page of math three times a week. That's all the homework they have. It frustrates me, I want Christy to expand her knowledge not have it decreased. We have been doing extra homework all year long anyway but it frustrates me that I am the one who has to take care of all that. I guess if I want Christy to be smart it's up to me, not her school. I am just glad that there are so many school programs on the Internet that can supplement what I have her do. Another thing, last week Christy brought home a note from the lunch lady saying that she owed $5.25. Now mind you that all last year we had free lunch and the first day of school I filled out the paper for free lunch again this year. For some reason I am required to pay for their delay in processing the paperwork. This did not make me happy. It makes me feel better to get this all out. Better on here than in an ornery note to her school.

I'm glad you will be leaving your CA schools soon. Hopefully you can get her in a school you like in Utah!
